Joetta and I were so young. “Terry! Terry, come here!” As I slowly awakened from a deep sleep to my lady’s cries in the dark of night, muffled by the closed bathroom door not twenty feet down the hall. “TeeeERRY!” I sat up, now aware something was wrong and at the site of blood dripping from her onto the towel cupping our what?… 10-11 week old child, laying lifeless before us.
I took the child—then commonly referred to as a fetus. After helping Jo clean from her body’s naturally induced abortion and back into bed, I then finished cleaning up and held our child “becoming” and instantly moved from a pro-abortion leaning Protestant (at least till viability) to a Pro-life perspective, the sacred—little as she/he was, less than 4” in length—imprinted on my life, our child.
In impact, though far more magical in experience, was the fertilization of Mary by what Scripture calls “The Over-Shadowing”. Though as a man I can only guess at the sense of it—as I have in “The Advent of God through Mary”, day five of chapter 1—the reality of the Holy Spirit’s abiding Presence I have know.
Unlike the impression left by way of loss described above, the Over-Shadowing impressed within in multiplied moments leaves me absolutely convinced with Paul that “neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39 NIV).
For Mary’s Experience go to:
Terry :). Blessing!
