We are now inside Holy Week; The intersecting climax in the Biblical Epic—where in a very real sense God died so that we may live. Now to be sure God was! ..before the first light burst from within the darkness of the first black hole. God is and will be when the last light of the universe of billions of stars are no longer. Inside the beauty and love of the Trinity of God a thousand billion universes could not contain these Three Persons so United in Love as to be One in essential Nature.
So, it is even more extraordinary that in a galaxy far away, that humans on the third rock from the sun, having turned away so long before, have captured the heart of God to the point of tasting the very “death” inside our human sin, our self-focused lives. And because in Jesus of Nazareth the Eternal Son, Father and Spirit have now fully embraced our jealousies, pride, lust, violence by becoming human, vulnerable and turning our further rejection into LIFE itself—the re-birth of being reconciled has begun.
In this brief story I’ve tried to get closer to the actual gospel of our Lord than the idea that Jesus was God’s loving way of turning God’s wrath aside. That theory is called the Penal Substitutionary theory of Atonement.
